imagine believing that Mexico, a country that is nearly 2 million
km², and a population of nearly 130 million, having no cars and no colleges. imagine the level of misinformation that requires. even the economically “poorest” countries in Latin America have cars and colleges.I agree. Europe would be a cool place to visit and I wouldn’t ever object to going, but the first chance I get to travel somewhere out of the country, I’m choosing Latin America. and if someone were to magically appear and tell me that I could live anywhere else in the world and they’d send me there instantaneously, I’d choose a Latin American country.
You wanna hear a good one? My baby boomer USAmerican MIL asked me if we had COLOR TELEVISION in Argentina. I was speechless.
Also, my husband’s uncle asked me at a family reunion dinner, in front of everyone, if I had graduated High School and my immediate response was to laugh and go yes of course. Like how do you explain to people that “dropping out” is not like, an option. They probably thought I was a bitch for laughing because I understand that it’s not necessarily a choice people make here (and also not like anyone at that table would have remotely been in that position) but like it goes to show the MENTALITY is so different. Bitch my parents didn’t even let me miss school unless I was actually sick, which I never was so guess what!!! We getting those perfect attendance awards every year! We were FENCED IN, none of this fenceless schools y’all got here (which is wild and activated my fight or flight response when I saw an elementary school WIDE OPEN for the first time) where you can fucking walk out at any given time. Anyways don’t be fooled by those “third world countries” shit people like to spew about south america, we’re doing light years better than y’all think.
The worst thing is that EVERYBODY has Internet nowadays. They can pull up their Apple©Iphone43© and search “cities of México” or “education in Argentina” and get well sourced info with pictures and everything. It’s what I do when I go to a new place or talk to someone from another culture, just to be informed and not embarrass myself (Also learning is cool). Hell I’m bombarded with US and World news (But mostly US, let’s be honest here) all the time.
But it’s like they CHOSE to be ignorant. Why?
Because Latin America not being the shithole that the U.S. depicts it to be, doesn’t fit the narrative of the people who want to believe that only capitalist/nationalist societies thrive and everyone else is just “left behind”. Also USAmericans are lazy. Research? But that’s too much effort!! If it’s not in FOX News or CNN then it must not exist!!
