Do people have fantasy recs for books that take place in modern settings?
I’m getting tired of high fantasy, horse drawn carriages, and zero cellphones.
I’m not looking for vampires and warewolves, but magic (maybe some fae, maybe some xmen like abilities) with modern technology. I need cars and computer to go with my super powers lol.
A few I like that I don’t hear talked about much:
Rules and Regulations for Mediating Myths and Magic by F T Lukens
The Uncrossing by Melissa Eastlake
Salt by Hannah Moskowitz
Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter
- The Arcadia Project books by Mishell Baker
- The October Daye series by Seanan McGuire
- The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch
- Son of a Trickster by Eden Robinson
- An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard
- London Falling by Paul Cornell
Would also suggest Emma Bull and Charles deLint, and The Hunter’s Moon by O.R. Melling though it’s not exactly modern anymore (set in the ‘90s, but then Bull’s not the most recent either). Oh, and I might as well add Of Blood and Honey by Stina Leicht, though that’s Ireland in the ‘70s.
