In Iroquois mythology, Oniare is a horned serpent said to lurk in the Great Lakes. It likes to capsize canoes and eat people, and some believe its breath to be poisonous.
Certain tales claim that Oniare will spare travellers who make offers to it. Others say that once can protect oneself by invoking the thunder god Himon, Oniare’s mortal enemy.
